Safety & Contractor Coordination

HEALTH & SAFETY COORDINATION FOR CONSTRUCTION, INDUSTRY & EVENTS

Wherever several companies work at the same time, they create risks for each other. Flight Event provides health and safety coordination (SiGeKo) under the German Construction Site Ordinance and contractor coordination – on construction sites, in industrial and commercial plants, during maintenance and shutdowns, in halls and venues, and at events.

Coordination services

Health & safety coordinator (SiGeKo)

Coordination during planning and execution for new builds, conversions and demolition, industrial and commercial construction and temporary structures. Preparing and updating the health and safety plan and the file for later work.

Contractor coordination

Coordinating the work when employees of several companies work at the same location – in the plant, in the hall, on site or during load-in and load-out.

Maintenance, turnarounds & shutdowns

Coordinating partner companies and contractors during maintenance, conversions and plant shutdowns in industry and commerce: scheduling, interfaces and safety briefings.

Induction & permits

Aligning risk assessments, inducting contractors on site-specific hazards and organising permit-to-work procedures for hazardous work such as hot work or work at height.

Site rules & inspections

Binding rules for all companies involved, regular site inspections, documented findings and agreed measures with the people in charge.

Events & temporary structures

Also for building and dismantling stages, grandstands, tents and exhibition stands. More under Event safety.

When a SiGeKo or contractor coordinator is needed

Construction site, factory hall or event site: as soon as several companies work in the same place, German occupational safety law requires coordination. Which rule applies depends on the project.

Construction Site Ordinance
If employees of several employers work on a construction site, the client must appoint one or more suitable coordinators (§ 3 BaustellV). A health and safety plan is also required if the site must be notified to the authority or particularly hazardous work under Annex II is carried out.

Several employers at one workplace
Outside construction sites, employers whose staff work at the same workplace must cooperate (§ 8 ArbSchG). Where necessary to avoid mutual hazards, a person must be appointed to coordinate the work (§ 6 DGUV Regulation 1).

Increased hazards
If the use of work equipment creates an increased hazard for employees of other employers, a coordinator must be appointed in writing (§ 13 BetrSichV).

Responsibility remains
The coordinator aligns, inducts and monitors. Each employer remains responsible for the safety of its own employees.

FAQ on safety and contractor coordination

What does a SiGeKo do?

Under the German Construction Site Ordinance, the health and safety coordinator aligns occupational safety measures when employees of several employers work on a construction site – during planning and execution. The coordinator prepares the health and safety plan, compiles a file for later work on the structure and checks that the measures are implemented.

When is a SiGeKo required?

As soon as employees of several employers work on a construction site, the client must appoint suitable coordinators (§ 3 BaustellV). A health and safety plan is also needed if the site must be notified – for example more than 30 working days with more than 20 people working at the same time, or more than 500 person-days – or if particularly hazardous work under Annex II is carried out.

What does a contractor coordinator do?

The contractor coordinator aligns the work when several companies operate at the same location – for example during maintenance, turnarounds and plant shutdowns, in production halls or during load-in and load-out. This includes aligning risk assessments, inducting contractors on site-specific hazards, organising permits and stepping in when there is danger; the client grants the necessary authority to issue instructions.

What is the difference between a SiGeKo and a contractor coordinator?

The SiGeKo is defined in the German Construction Site Ordinance and is appointed by the client for a construction project. Contractor coordination is based on § 8 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, § 6 DGUV Regulation 1 and § 13 of the Industrial Safety Regulation and applies when companies work together outside classic construction sites, for example in running plants, halls and venues.

Which sectors and projects does Flight Event work for?

Building, conversion and demolition, industrial and commercial construction, maintenance and plant shutdowns in industry and commerce, halls and venues, as well as exhibitions, events and temporary structures.

What qualifications does Flight Event have?

Owner Flo Popp is a health and safety coordinator (SiGeKo) under the German Construction Site Ordinance, qualified according to RAB 30, Annex B and C, and a certified contractor coordinator. Both certificates were issued by ExpertMe.

When should the coordinator be involved?

As early as possible. The SiGeKo has to be appointed while the execution is being planned, and contractor coordination also works best while schedules, companies and dates are still being planned.
