Technical direction: frequently asked questions

What does a technical director do at an event?

Technical direction brings together the production’s technical requirements and coordinates departments such as lighting, sound, video, rigging and staging. Flight Event’s agreed scope can cover technical preparation, interfaces between suppliers, build-up, show operation and dismantling.

When should technical direction be involved?

Ideally during planning and concept development, before major technical decisions, schedules and equipment orders are fixed. A central technical contact is especially useful when several suppliers, complex builds or changing venues are involved.

What responsibilities does technical direction cover?

Responsibilities, decision-making authority and interfaces are agreed for each project. They include technical coordination and safety-related interfaces within the commissioned scope. Appointing a technical director does not automatically transfer every duty of the venue operator or event organiser.

How does technical direction differ from production management?

Technical direction focuses on technical planning, departments and delivery. Production management coordinates the wider production process, including people, suppliers, logistics and schedules. The two roles work closely together, with clearly defined responsibilities.
